Ohio Medicare Supplements

Health Insurance with No Medical Questions

There are so many choices to make when you get ready to select a Medicare supplement. The simpler the government tries to make it, the more complicated it gets.

I am not trying to upset you, but look at some of the choices you need to make:

  • Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement?
  • Medicare supplements have ten different plan designs; A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M and N
  • Medicare Advantage plan - PPO or HMO?
  • Which Medicare Advantage plan should you select? I can't even list them all here.

Wait, it gets better, we have not even discussed the Part D drug plans. There are dozens of them.

Let's face it, you need some help. That is what we do. Since the available plans vary according to where you live, I need you to put your zipcode in the box at the top of this page. Answer a few simple questions and a Medicare specialist will contact you. Or, if you wish, you can call us.

What does a Medicare supplement cover?

Unless you are on disability, you will be eligible to receive Medicare when you are 65. I am not going to get into the amount of quarters you needed to work or any of those details. If you are on this site I assume you have or are about to be on Medicare.

The information on this site is also valid if you are receiving Medicare because you qualified for disability.

Medicare has multiple parts.

Part A is the hospital or inpatient section, Part B covers outpatient expenses like doctor visits and Part D covers prescriptions.

However, Medicare does not cover everything. There are deductibles and coinsurance. With certain options there are even co pays.

The purpose of a Medicare supplement or Medigap policy is to cover the gaps in coverage. Depending on which supplement you purchase it does this to a greater or lesser extent.

What exactly am I trying to cover?

Part A of Medicare has a deductible in 2012 of $1,156. You are responsible for this amount. Once you meet your deductible, Part A pays 100% for the first 60 days. After than you are responsible for 289 per day for days 61-90 of a hospital stay, $578 per day for days 91-150 of a hospital stay and all costs after 150 days.

If you are in a skilled nursing facility, you pay $144.50 per day for days 21 through 100 each benefit period.

Part B of Medicare has a $140 deductible and then pays 80%.

So you can immediately see that with these deductibles and your 20% coinsurance, you can be on the hook for a lot of money. That is one of the reasons people buy supplements.

What else does a Medicare supplement cover?

In addition to the Part A and B expenses, Medicare does have a lifetime limit on the number of days it will cover. Most Medigap policies give you an extra 365 days. Believe me, you don't think you will need them now. But, many people max out their reserve hospital days and are glad to have the extra 365 days.

Certain Medicare supplements will cover Foreign Travel Emergency, but some will not. If you plan to travel abroad you might need a special travel health insurance plan. You can call me and I will tell you if you do or not.

What about prescriptions?

Prescriptions are are covered by Part D. Again, I am not going to give you the details of how this works. There are dozens of Part D plans and you need to be very careful to pick the plan that covers your prescriptions for the right premium.

Should I consider a Medicare Advantage plan?

Some of the Medicare Advantage plans have excellent networks, low co pays, build in the Part D coverage and cost you very little compared with supplements. Some do not cost anything at all.

How do I figure all of this out. There are so many choices?

You need a friend who really knows all the plans, the prices and can help you come to an intelligent decision as to which plan will work best for you. That is what we do.

Again, I urge you to just use the form at the top of this page and put in your zip code. They will ask you a few simple questions. It is all very private. If you want to put in some "dummy" information into some of the boxes that is alright. But we must have a valid name, telephone number, date of birth and zipcode.
